Congratulations on making the decision to start eating healthy! Clean eating takes a bit of getting used to but once you get organized and take some time to prepare for the week, it will become like anything else you do – a routine. It all starts with what you buy at the store, so here are my clean eating grocery shopping tips to help you get started.
Make a list – If you’re new to clean eating, become familiarized with a list of approved ingredients in your eating plan. I’ve been using Portion Fix (which is the actual name of the meal plan that supports Beachbody workout programs) for almost two years. Sometimes I get bored with my favorites and I will often times review the lists and find things I haven’t had in a while and add them to my shopping list. Come up with your list of weekly items you will always need to have. Mine include Greek yogurt, berries, avocado, salad greens, eggs, almond milk, chicken, broccoli and low fat cheeses.
Eat seasonally – As the seasons change so does what’s more readily available. Fall is here so it’s the perfect time to be cooking up sweet potatoes, squash, apples and pears. Winter, stock up on sweet citrus fruits, roast up Brussel sprouts and root vegetables and so on.
Stock up – I love freezing bulk items and stocking my pantry. When your favorite items are on sale, stock up and save money. I always have frozen pork tenderloin, chicken parts, ground turkey on hand. Must have pantry items include beans, chopped tomatoes, low sodium chicken stock, almond milk and oatmeal.
Plan your meals – Think about your menu for the week and have a couple meals with lots of leftovers. Grill or roast up some chicken for one meal but have lots of extra meat to make lunches or another meal with the leftover. Grilled salmon is fantastic cold or slightly reheated over a spinach salad and tastes great for a few days. Left over chicken can be worked into soups, chili, salads, tacos or just reheated with some fresh veggies.
Get support – I host a friendly, interactive Facebook group that has over 100 members all working on clean eating with the 21 Day Fix or other workout programs. We share meal prepping tips, recipes and answer questions for each other. Please join us to help you with your journey.
